1. Purpose of This Tool
The CarbonCalc calculator provides a rapid, indicative estimate of an individual’s or household’s carbon footprint using high-level financial and activity data. It is intended for education, awareness, and behavioural insight only, and is not suitable for formal carbon reporting, regulatory compliance, or corporate disclosure.
2. What Type of Emissions Are Included
This calculator primarily estimates:
- Scope 1 emissions (direct household fuel use)
- Scope 2 emissions (purchased electricity and heating)
- Selected personal Scope 3 emissions, including:
- Household energy use
- Personal transport (fuel, public transport, flights)
- Food consumption
- Consumer goods and services
- Household waste and recycling behaviour
Business emissions, industrial processes, and full organisational supply chains are not included. This tool is intended solely for personal and household use.
3. How Your Inputs Are Used
Users enter monthly spending or activity values (e.g., money spent on fuel or food). These inputs are converted into estimated carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions using:
- Average price-to-emissions conversion factors
- Lifecycle-based carbon intensity estimates
- Sector-average emissions factors
This approach enables emissions estimation without requiring technical data such as kilowatt-hours, fuel volumes, or food weights.
4. Emission Factors and Data Sources
Emission factors are derived from:
- Government conversion factor datasets
- Peer-reviewed lifecycle assessment (LCA) studies
- National energy and transport statistics
- Publicly available environmental reporting standards
Values are periodically reviewed and updated to reflect changes in:
- Electricity grid intensity
- Fuel efficiency
- Consumption patterns
5. National Averages and Comparisons
- Per-capita national emissions statistics
- Average household expenditure surveys
- Transport and food consumption baselines
6. Accuracy and Limitations
- Self-reported data may contain errors or omissions
- Spending does not always directly reflect physical consumption
- Grid intensity and product sourcing vary regionally
- Seasonal variation is not fully captured in a single-month snapshot
7. Updates and Continuous Improvement
- Regional electricity grid variation
- More detailed food supply-chain modelling
- Improved transport efficiency representation
- User-specific lifestyle adjustments
8. Ethical Use & Responsibility
- We do not sell, inflate, or manipulate carbon results
- We do not use scare tactics or guilt-based messaging
- We do not claim that offsets or single actions alone “solve” climate change
